In 2014 official fanclub for Maestro Pappano, “PAPPANO’S Club Cantabile” was established on a commemorative day of his birthday of 30th December.
Music Festival Argerich’s Meeting Point in Beppu will support maestro Antonio Pappano’s activities as we share deep excitement from the meeting with him at our Music Festival. We will name our activities “PAPPANO’S Club Cantabile” and share information on maestro Pappano’s activities.

Currently Music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Antonio Pappano was born in London of Italian parents. After moving to the United States at the age of 13, he continued his studies in piano, composition and conducting. His work as a repetiteur and assistant conductor rapidly led to his engagement in theatres throughout the world: New York City Opera, Gran Teatro del Liceo (Barcelona), Frankfurt Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Bayreuth Festival, where he was assistant to Daniel Barenboim for Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal and the Der Ring des Nibelungen.
In 1987 Pappano made his debut as an opera conductor with La boheme at the Norske Opera in Oslo and was appointed Musical Director there in 1990. During this period, he also made his conducting debuts at Covent Garden (La boheme, June 1990), English National Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Theatre du Chatelet and Berlin Staatsoper.
At the age of 32 Pappano was named Music Director of the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie and remained in this post for ten years. In 1993, Pappano made a notable debut at the Vienna Staatsoper, replacing Christoph von Dohnanyi at the last minute in a new production of Wagner’s Siegfried, for which he received unanimous acclaim. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York in 1997 in a new production of Eugene Onegin and the same year became Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal guest conductor. In 1999, he made his debut with the Bayreuth Festspiele conducting a new production of Lohengrin.
Pappano has also conducted the Oslo Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, The Tokyo Philharmonic, the Gurzenich Orchestra in Cologne, the Orchestra Philharmonic of Radio-France, the Chicago Symphony, the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Muenchner Philharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
He has recorded Don Carlo for EMI Classics (CD and DVD) as well as La boheme, La rondine (awarded Best Recording of the Year by Gramophone Magazine), Il trittico, Massenet’s Werther and Manon, Tosca, Il trovatore and Tristan und Isolde. His orchestral recordings include Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4, 5 & 6 and Respighi’s Roman Trilogy and he has also partnered Hanna Chang, Leif Ove Andsnes and Maxim Vengerov in concerto recordings. He was awarded “Artist of the Year 2000′ by Gramophone, the 2003 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera and the 2005 Philharmonic Society Conductor of the Year Award.
Last season, Antonio Pappano conducted the complete Ring cycle, the world premiere of Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s The Minotaur and a new production of Don Carlo at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He also made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
He conducts productions of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Lulu and Barbiere di Siviglia at Covent Garden. Mr. Pappano has also recently recorded Madame Butterfly for EMI Classics with Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann.
Antonio Pappano participated in the 3rd (2001), 5th (2003) and 6th (2004) events of Music Festival Argerich’s Meeting Point in Beppu. Each time, he conducted the Special Orchestra of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music for Beppu Argerich Music Festival, displaying overwhelming orchestra conducting in addition to his critically acclaimed prominent artistry. Since 2003, Antonio Pappano has served as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Music Festival. He participated in the Music Festival’s 10th anniversary concert, conducting Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome, for which he is a music director. The audience was enthused by Pappano’s conducting, which fully displayed the talent of the orchestra.
With his efforts, “MUSIC FESTIVAL Argerich’s Meeting Point in Rome – for exchanges between Rome and Oita” was held in December 2018.
Performances by musical masters with Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky together with Maestro Pappano, which were the envy of the world music fans, charmed an audience of 2,800.
In 2023, he serve chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
