Rentaro Tomioka was born in Sapporo in 1986. He studied at Toho Gakuen Music High School and Toho Gakuen College, and then completed MASP at Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel. Tomioka studied the cello with Yoshiro Uehara and Hakuro Mori and string quartet with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartett). In 2006 he formed the Verus String Quartet. The quartet won third place in the quartet division at the 57th ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 2008, which was the first time for a quartet organized with only Japanese players to win a prize at this competition in the 38 years since the Tokyo Quartet won first prize. Tomioka served as principle guest cellist of the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra from June 2014 to March 2017. He has been the principle cellist for the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra since November 2017.
